Design: v. to decide upon the look and function of a space or building.
Savvy: adj. clever, in the know, slick, streetwise, appreciating, discerning
Are you the kind of person that can name the grain of wood in your friend’s hardwood floors? Then you might be design savvy.
Do you know the difference between mid-century and 1940 art deco furniture? Then you might be design savvy.
Do you chuckles quietly when someone calls periwinkle, lilac? Then you might be design savvy.
Being a fan of beautiful homes is pretty common. Big homes are admirable. Big homes make us think someone very important, smart and fancy lives there. But size doesn’t make a home design savvy. The standard for the last 20+ years has been granite counters, hardwood floors and beige walls. These standards continue to be built in new developments and remodels today. They are relatable and they are sell-able. But for the design savvy, being ordinary will not do. Having the exact same home as all your neighbors is conformity, like sheep. The design savvy person craves individuality, craves to express themselves. Are you design savvy?
Below are some example of ordinary vs design savvy. Can you tell the difference?
